A script can feel short while you are writing and still run long when read aloud. It can also look complete on the page but finish too quickly once a confident presenter starts speaking. Start with a clean script draft
Before timing a script, remove notes that will not be read aloud. Stage directions, editing reminders, camera notes, slide labels, and production comments can inflate the word count if they stay in the draft.
Keep these items only if the presenter will actually say them:
- Spoken intro and outro lines
- Voiceover narration
- Presenter transitions
- Demo explanations
- Calls to action
- Sponsor or compliance language
If your draft includes slide titles or scene labels, keep them on separate lines and delete them before the final estimate unless they are spoken. A clean spoken draft gives the most useful timing result.
Choose a realistic speaking pace
Words per minute is the main variable in a script length estimate. A fast speaker may deliver the same script much sooner than a careful teacher or trainer.
Use these ranges as a starting point:
- 120 WPM: careful lessons, technical walkthroughs, training, and dense concepts
- 140 WPM: conversational presentations, webinars, podcasts, and most video scripts
- 160 WPM: energetic explainers, creator videos, and confident product demos
- 180 WPM: fast ads, short recaps, and high-energy voiceovers
If the content has charts, code, product screens, or examples, choose a slower pace. Viewers need time to connect the words with what they see. If the script is a simple promotional read or a short social clip, a faster pace may feel natural.
Calculate the estimated runtime
The formula is straightforward:
Runtime in minutes = word count / words per minute
A 700-word script at 140 WPM is about five minutes. The same script at 120 WPM is closer to five minutes and fifty seconds. At 160 WPM, it is about four minutes and twenty seconds.
Those differences are large enough to affect editing decisions. If a video needs to be under three minutes, changing from a careful pace to a fast pace might not be enough. You may need to cut words, simplify a section, or move detail into supporting visuals.
Set a target runtime before editing
Scripts are easier to edit when you know the target. A five-minute video at 140 WPM supports about 700 spoken words. A ten-minute webinar section at 120 WPM supports about 1,200 words. A 60-second intro at 160 WPM supports about 160 words.
Use the target runtime to decide whether the draft needs more detail or a tighter cut. If the calculator says you need to cut 250 words, look for repeated setup, long introductions, unnecessary transitions, and examples that can move to slides or captions. If you need to add words, expand definitions, add a concrete example, or include a stronger transition between points.
Break the script into sections
Total runtime matters, but section timing is often more useful. A five-minute script can still feel uneven if the intro takes two minutes and the main lesson feels rushed.
Separate sections with blank lines before estimating:
- Hook or opening
- Context and promise
- Main point one
- Main point two
- Example or demo
- Recap and call to action

Leave room for pauses and interaction

For recorded videos, a small buffer gives editors room to trim silence and tighten delivery. For live sessions, a larger buffer helps with questions, transitions, and technical delays. If a ten-minute talk calculates at nine minutes and fifty seconds, it is probably too close. Aim shorter or cut a section.
Practice once before final recording
After the word-count estimate, read the script aloud once. A practice read catches phrasing that looked good on the page but sounds awkward. It also reveals whether your real pace is slower or faster than the preset you chose.
If the estimate and practice read are close, you can record with confidence. If they differ, adjust the words-per-minute rate and rerun the calculation. Over time, you will learn your own typical pace for lessons, tutorials, sales demos, podcasts, or voiceovers.
Script timing is not about making every read robotic. It is about giving yourself a useful planning baseline. Once you know the approximate runtime, you can make better choices about structure, examples, edits, and pacing before production starts.
