One video rarely fits every place you need to publish it. A recording that looks right in a widescreen player may feel too small on a phone. A vertical clip may not fit a slide deck. A square preview may need tighter framing than the original camera shot.
Aspect ratio cropping solves that format mismatch. Instead of stretching the video, cropping changes the shape of the frame by removing unused space from the sides or top and bottom. The goal is to keep the important subject visible while matching the shape expected by the destination.
Choose the right aspect ratio first
Start with the platform or workflow, then choose the crop:
- 9:16 vertical: TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, mobile-first updates
- 16:9 widescreen: YouTube, webinars, course videos, website embeds
- 1:1 square: feed previews, compact updates, thumbnails, documentation examples
- 4:5 portrait: Instagram and LinkedIn feed posts where vertical space helps
- 4:3 classic: older slide formats, classroom displays, archive footage, some training layouts
If you are not sure which one to use, think about where the viewer will watch the video. Phone-first clips usually benefit from vertical framing. Presentation and course clips usually benefit from widescreen. Social feed posts often work well as square or 4:5 portrait exports.
Review what the crop will remove
Cropping is different from resizing. Resizing makes the whole video larger or smaller. Cropping removes part of the frame to create a new shape.
Before exporting, preview the source video and identify what must stay visible. For a talking-head clip, that may be the speaker's face and hands. For a product demo, it may be the active app window. For a classroom recording, it may be the whiteboard, experiment, or slide content.
If the subject is centered, use a center focal point. If the subject sits to one side, choose left or right. If important information is near the top or bottom, choose the matching focal point so the crop does not remove it.

Pick output width based on the destination
Output width affects file size, processing time, and visual detail. A larger export can preserve more detail, but it can also take longer to create and produce a larger file.
Use 480px for lightweight previews, quick reviews, and chat-friendly clips. Use 720px for balanced social exports and most internal sharing. Use 1080px when viewers need to read text, inspect product details, or publish a sharper social video.
For vertical 9:16 clips, output width controls the narrow side. A 1080px vertical export can be large because the height is much greater. If the source clip is a quick internal preview, 720px may be easier to share.
Batch crop when one project needs many formats
Many teams need more than one crop from the same project. A teacher might need a 16:9 lesson clip and a 9:16 mobile recap. A creator might need a widescreen YouTube cut, a vertical teaser, and a square preview. A business team might need a demo crop for LinkedIn and a training crop for an internal LMS.
Batch cropping helps keep that work organized. Add all the clips in one session, choose settings per file, then export finished MP4 files individually or as a ZIP. Name source files clearly before you upload them so the final downloads are easy to identify.
Privacy and quality checks before sharing
Browser-based cropping avoids an upload step, but you should still review the finished file before publishing. Check that the subject stays in frame, text remains readable, and private information has not become more prominent after the crop.
Also confirm audio is still appropriate for the destination. The cropper keeps audio when the source has a usable audio track, but some social or training workflows may require captions, trimming, or a separate audio pass after cropping.
Cropping is best for shape changes. Use a full video editor if you also need transitions, captions, color correction, overlays, multi-track audio, or detailed timeline edits. For quick aspect ratio changes, a browser cropper is often enough.
